Born in Kansas City and musically bred in Atlanta, Janelle Monae transported her out of this world stylings to Brooklyn recently; performing for a mixed bunch gathered at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) for the 2009 Afro-Punk Festival. She is small in stature but her voice is massive and stage presence greater still. The energy Miss Monae emits from the stage is equal parts refreshing and contagious, evidenced by a heavy endorsement from both Outkast’s Big Boi and Bad Boy’s Diddy. Discovering her on My Space, Diddy has since labeled Janelle Monae as “one of the most important signings” of his career.
I’m looking forward to seeing what the future holds for this budding rock star…
